I was interested in what other freelancers in general charge per hour for their expertise so I took a look at the site http://www.peopleperhour.com
PeoplePerHour is an online marketplace for freelancers to promote their skills, bid on projects and buy services from other freelancers. Most of this work is done remotely.
The Research
On their site I clicked on ‘Buy Services’ > ‘Freelancers’ and then set the filter to show only UK based freelance rates of over £10 per hour. The results on the 7th October 2013 were as follows:
Total charging more than £10 an hour = 50,268
£10 – £20 p/h = 25,834
£20 – £30 = 13,173
£30 – £40 = 4,875
£40 – £50 = 3,300
£50 – £75 = 1,582
£75 – £100 = 832
more than £100 = 672
To better understand these results you need to know more about the site:
- Freelancers on the site have a wide range of experience and expertise including Web Designers, Developers, Graphic Designers, Copywriters, Marketing and Business Admin.
- There’s usually a lot of competition for projects which can mean freelancers keeping their rate low to win jobs.
- UK professionals bid alongside freelancers from other countries including India and Eastern Europe who due to lower running costs can charge lower rates.
- PeoplePerhour take a percentage of all earnings so some rates may be set to account for this.
In Conclusion
- Over half the UK freelancers in this sample charge £10 – £20 per hour.
- Over 75% charge between £10 – £30 per hour.
- Less than 10% charge more than £50 per hour.
